Its Spring Time! Hello, friends. When I originally started writing this post, it was a beautiful day outside with sun and cheer. Its not like that anymore. There is snow again, and I have to wear my puffy jacket everywhere. Yall know Illinois weather. I just wish it were warm already. But the good news is that spring break is in a week! Omg, what do we do? Before I start, I want everyone to rack their brains to imagine what spring break is like in college. Everyone has a different experience, and I am going to list some options you can take advantage of while at Illinois. Okay, I love breaks. Its a chance to sit back and not worry about classes for a whole week. But people spend their spring breaks differently. While a lot of students go home, a fair amount stays. Some people take trips with friends while others use the week to catch up on homework. Spring break is anything you want it to be. My freshman year, I spent my spring break at home and had a good time relaxing, but I really wished I had done something. So, my sophomore year, I took a class that had a spring break trip with it. The class was Honduras Water Project (which you can all take when you are on campus). In the class, students design a water system for a community in Honduras. After we collected any extra information we needed, we traveled there over break. I had a blast. I was so happy that I decided to do something instead of staying home. This year for spring break, I am doing the exact same thing, except in Guatemala. Ill also be mentoring the class instead of being a participant. These are definitely opportunities that you can all take advantage of when youre on campus. You just have to keep your eyes out for them. Heres a list of things you can do over spring break. 1. Go Home If home is close enough that you can return and have enough time to hangout with family or friends, do it. I would recommend this for people who are not particularly looking to spend any money and want to spend time with family or friends. 2. Stay on Campus Odds are that you are not the only person staying on campusâ€" lots of people do. Many students stay on campus if they live out-of-state or in a different country, since their homes are hundreds or even thousands of miles away. I would recommend this option for those of you who are looking to catch up on school work, need some alone time, or want to pick up extra hours at their on campus job. The residence halls do close, but if youre worried about having a place to stay, the university always has housing options available over breaks. You can find all of that information on the Illinois housing website. 3. Go on a Trip With Some Friends Collect your friends and road trip to the Smoky Mountains! Spring break doesnt always mean taking flights outside of the country or going to a beach (but it can be if you want). If you really need a break from campus and school, I would highly encourage you to look into this option. I feel like what stops a lot of people from traveling during spring break is the worry about money. If you are in this situation, I recommend planning early and looking into smaller getaways. Just because break is a week long doesnt mean you have to be gone for that long, and there are lots of small trips you can take to local state parks. 4. Volunteer for a Service Project I remember in my freshman year I keep seeing an ad for a spring break volunteer trip. It was to NOLA and they were going to go help rebuild homes. I remember telling myself that I should apply, but I ended up missing the deadline. But you can definitely take advantage of this option! If you want to spend your break doing something that impacts the lives of others and meet some new friends, I encourage you to look into one of these trips. 5. Study Abroad Okay, lets say you dont sign up for a class that takes a study abroad trip, but you still want to do it. There are a ton of programs within the study abroad office that offer week-long trips to many parts of the country. You can check out a new place and meet some friends along the way. If you want to explore a new place and potentially earn some class credit, look into study abroad programs. There are also a lot of scholarships available for those who may not know how to fund the trip. Remember to look into these way before break because most have application deadlines months before. Alright, now you all have some options on what to do with a spring break. Honestly, all of these can be applied to fall, winter, and summer breaks too. Through her prologue and tale, she makes mirror images of herself , which reflects the person who she really is. Dame Alice desires the obvious in life, but what she most desires above all is being more powerful than her man, her spouse, and her lover. In a relationship, she wishes to be dominant, the one who has the last to say, the one who has control over all things in the relationship. This can be first seen in her prologue, I'll have a husband yet who shall be both my debtor and my slave and bear his tribulation to the grave upon his flesh, as long as I'm his wife. For mine shall be the power all his life over his proper body, and not he?(55-59). It is then shown again in her tale when knight returns the castle and fulfills the task assigned by the queen, a woman wants the self-same sovereignty over her husband as over her lover, and master him; he must not be above her (174-176). Yet another example of Dame Alice's wish to be dominant is presented later in the tale told by her. The old hag, after marrying the knight, gives him a choice. It was either to have her old and ugly but faithful or young and pretty but wonder off. You have two choices; which one will you try? To have me old and ugly till I die, but still loyal, true, and humble wife that will never displease you all her life, or would you rather I were young and pretty and chance your arm what happens in the city where friends will visit you because of me, yes, and on other places too, maybe.(309-316) By comparing the Wife of Bath's prologue to her tale, it is quite obvious that Dame Alice wants to be the old hag. In some aspects, Dame Alice can be said to be jealous of the old hag. After all, the hag was given power and dominance over her husband. In Dame Alice's true life it was not completely true. The husbands that Dame Alice had, three of them were good and two were bad. (92) The three that she had were called 'good' because they were rich and old?(93) Dame Alice had complete control over them. But for her fourth and fifth husband, there was another story. The fourth one cheated on her and the fifth one, Johnny, she loved most, the one I took for love and not for wealth?(339) And it is because she loved him so that she gave up everything to Johnny. I handed him the money, lands, and all that ever had been given me before; this I repented later. . .(401-403) From this it can be seen that Johnny had the upper hand. And of course, this is not what Dame Alice desire. However, in her tale, the old hag has the power in the relationship. She is given the choice of what to do and when to do it, you make the choice yourself?(322). Dame Alice had the option of choosing taken away from her when she gave everything to Johnny. The major similarity between Dame Alice and the old hag is the appearance. Both Dame Alice and the hag are not very attractive and both are old. Dame Alice is describes herself as I was forty then, to tell the truth. But still, I always had a coltish tooth. Yes, I'm gap toothed; it suits me well?(394-396). The old hag is described by the knight in the tale as old, and so abnomably plain, so poor to start with, so low-bred to follow?(236-237). The Pragmatic Education Philosophy

Pragmatism emerged from the writings of John Dewey who believed that experimentation was the best approach for educating young minds. For example, pragmatists feel that field trips, educational excursions etc are more effective in teaching students about the world instead of audio-visual aids. Pragmatism includes such as thoughts as futurism, and educational humanism and Reconstructionism. Pragmatic education philosophy doesn't assign a traditional role to the teachers who are only seen as guides and not exactly more knowledgeable beings. George R. Knight in his book on education philosophies explained that pragmatism focuses on real life experiences as the main source of knowledge and education. They gives the example of field trips as he says that for a child to learn about dairy products, its better to take him to a barn and let him experience the whole thing himself instead of showing him a movie on the subject. (p. 75) Idealism is an important philosophy that gained greater influence over education in the 20th century and was not so popular prior to that. It has been present in the educational field for a long time emphasizing the reality of ideas, thoughts, and mind over material and matter. William E. Hocking who is a modern thinker in this area maintained that due to emphasis on ideas; this philosophy should have been called â€Å"idea-ism† instead of idealism. This is because idealism is more concerned with intrinsic values such as honesty, truth, courage etc while idealism in the case of education stresses the importance of ideas, thoughts and mind precisely. Educationists working on idealistic philosophies would concentrate more on the development of ideas instead of more physical things believing that this would lead to action automatically. Students are taught that they create or produce what they think and they are told to strive for perfection. Realism is more or less a reaction to idealism. This philosophy maintains that material and physical world exists independent of ideas and thoughts. Whether we think about a mountain or not, it does exist. It will exist even if we don't think about it or have never had an idea of what a mountain is like. Realist educationists would want students to learn through their senses of smell, feel, and taste since they believe in the existence of the natural world. They also maintain that the best way is to learn through experiencing the physical world. Nature plays an important role here as educationist would prefer to teach through observation of natural order. The teachers with realistic bend of mind would want students to development judgment and ethics by experiencing and observing the world. Behavior psychology is also one of the important branches of study for realist educationists. Existentialism philosophy focuses on emotions more than the intellect. The person, his values, beliefs, ideals, and identity are of greater importance than his intellectual capacity and for this reason it views education in slightly negative light. This is because they feel that a student learning through traditional educational means would become nothing more than a pawn in capitalist world. To become a whole and healthy human being who has a unique personality and thinking capacity, it is important to allow the students to explore the world on their own. â€Å"Existentialism is not a philosophy but a label for several widely different revolts against traditional philosophy. Most of the living â€Å"existentialists† have repudiated this label, and a bewildered outsider might well conclude that the only thing they have in common is a marked aversion for each other. Existentialism supports the idea of allowing students all possible answers to a question instead of handing them down one answer as the only and final solution.
